In this episode, I interview Bruce Bright Sr, a Marine Corps veteran, entrepreneur and my father. He started his entrepreneurial journey at the age of 11 when he started organizing empty soda bottles for the gas station down the street from his house. He kept his entrepreneurial spirit alive through his teenage years when he convinced his boss to let him rent out the company's boom truck to drive around and do work on people's houses on the weekends.
Bruce Bright Sr was approached on a Tuesday, a week before his high school graduation, by some friends and they proposed the idea to join the Marine Corps. By Friday of that week he was on his way to bootcamp and that was the start to his 28 year military career. He ended up being 1 out of 15 F-18 squadron commanding officers in the entire world and ended up retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In 2007, Bruce Sr retired from the military and in 2009 after working for a commercial real estate firm for 2 years he started his first company, On Target Leading is an executive coaching firm that Dr. Bright started in order to help organizations run more effectively and with more satisfaction from the employees, which in turn usually results in more profitability.
Dr. Bright created the E4 Life system of coaching and it is made up of 4 concepts: Excitement, Energy, Emotional Intelligence, and Execution.
The first step, Excitement, is crucial to anyone being satisfied with their life and it is a pretty simple idea that can make a persons life dramatically more happy. If you aren't doing something that you're excited about, quit and go follow your passions. Life is too short to wake up and go to a job you hate everyday.
The next step is Energy and this is gauged by a number of assessments that Dr. Bright uses. The higher your energy the more satisfied and successful you will be. If you are constantly living from a low level of energy, you will have a much less satisfying life.
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and control your emotions, as well as being able to help others do the same. Understanding and harnessing the power of emotional intelligence is a key factor in successful leadership. In fact, studies have shown that people with high EI have greater mental health, exemplary job performance, and more potent leadership skills.
The fourth and final component of E4 Life is execution, meaning the ability to act on your plans and achieve results. When your excitement, energy, and emotional intelligence are all aligned, your ability to execute becomes second nature

Dr. Bright talks about why he became an entrepreneur and it was simply a question of the amount of freedom he wanted. He wanted to spend time with his kids and be able to go on vacation whenever he wanted. He really just didn't want to answer to a boss and the only way to do this is to be your own boss.
The reason many people don't take the leap to start their own company's is because they can't fathom the risk of losing their income. The path of an entrepreneur is rough, but if you are successful, you have the ultimate freedom in your life. You will make much more money than the average US income and will more than likely do less work than you were doing at your day job.
The risk is also blown out of proportion when people are comparing risk to reward. Let's say you have some savings and you quit your job to start a company. After a year you realize that the company isn't going to make it and you have to dissolve the company. Worst case scenario has happened and all you have to do is go get another job like you had before. So, you went from having a day job, to following your dream, to having another day job. Not much of a risk if you ask me!
Life is too short to not take a 'risk' to do what you want with your life!
But... don't get me wrong, not everyone is built to be an entrepreneur and not everyone wants to be one. So, if you are happy going to your job and getting a paycheck every couple weeks then by all means go get it!
The most important thing in life is that you are doing something with your life that you are happy with and when it's all over you can look back at it and say 'Wow I did what I loved!"
